Information systems are used to communicate information from one person, or group, to another. They are also used to store information for later use. For instance, your address book on your mobile phone is an information system. A website is an information system - it communicates information from a business or organisation to an online audience. Companies keep multiple information systems to help them manage the day to day running of their business - from information on customers and products, to financial information about the state of their business. As you can see, information systems are deeply pervasive in our society; they are also predominantly run as computer-based systems.
This degree is unique in that it provides a broad understanding of the business environment together with the skills needed to identify and solve problems relating to information needs. This is done right from day one of the course through a programme of interaction with real companies, organisations and people. This 'hands-on' approach to studying Business Information Systems builds up your ability to evaluate the implications of information technology within a real-world environment. This helps cultivate your confidence and competence in making decisions to select the right information systems solution to a given problem.
Businesses look to employ graduates who have a strong knowledge of business needs combined with the skills, knowledge and practice needed to use information systems to meet these needs. The continued practicality of this course provides you with these skills. It will make you a strong candidate for employment in almost any company seeking someone to help them solve these problems. You could be employed by an information systems provider or a business user of information systems.
