The Master’s programme in Humanitarian Action is offered by seven European universities in The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, Belgium and France. They are united in the Network on Humanitarian Action (NOHA).
This interdisciplinary Master’s programme teaches students the methods and skills required to assess the means of intervention employed by humanitarian agencies, the consequences of international interventions and reconstruction programmes. It provides students with a solid foundation for understanding the political, geopolitical, economic and social causes of conflicts and disastercoping strategies. It introduces ways of coping with the consequences of disasters and conflicts in close co-operation with local communities.
Most of the NOHA graduates work in the field of humanitarian relief and international co-operation as representatives of international organizations and institutions, fund raisers, managers, administrators, researchers, evaluators, project monitors, lobbyists, consultants, among many other functions.
The Master’s programme in Humanitarian Action at the University of Groningen is open to graduates with an academic degree (Bachelor’s or the equivalent) in the following fields: International Relations, History, Law, Medicine, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication, Economics, Management, Geography, Spatial Sciences or related fields.
Applicants should be proficient in English. The requirement is aminimum TOEFL score of 580 (paper-based) or an overall IELTS score of 6.5.
The programme is highly selective and has a limited amount of places (20-25). Students will be selected based on an assessment of their educational background, field experience and motivation.
