Course overview
English at Southampton offers a course which covers a broad timespan, from the Middle Ages to the present day, and also defines its subject broadly, including creative writing and film studies. Characteristic features of our teaching are an emphasis on the relationship of literature to its historical and cultural context, and an interest in theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches.
Philosophy offers an exceptionally broad range of content, covering most of the serious areas of Western philosophy, and aims to sustain traditional modes of discussion through small tutorial groups and seminar groups.
In 1997, in conjunction with Politics, Philosophy established the Centre for Post-Analytic Philosophy, for the study of the relationship between analytical and Continental philosophy. This has opened more possibilities for theoretical links between English and Philosophy than in most English universities, reinforced by the substantial element of critical theory in the English course.
