If you want to study English at university and are considering teaching as a career, then this programme is for you. But even if you are undecided about your final career destination, this degree allows you to progress to postgraduate study in literature or linguistics and a range of other careers.
This programme covers the knowledge, practical skills and understanding of English within a range of educational contexts through taught modules, an educational placement and a final-year dissertation. It draws on the specialised expertise of the School of Education in the areas of late 18th- to 21st-century literature, drama, film, linguistics, early years, primary and secondary education, literacy and bilingualism.
The programme does not provide qualified teacher status (QTS).
First year
First-year modules draw on a diverse variety of critical, theoretical and applied approaches in the study of a number of literary and cinematic texts and linguistic materials. The emphasis on developing appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding enables you to read and research with increased confidence. Your foundation year provides stimulating introductory modules in: language variety; literature (poetry, prose, drama and film); theories of education and learning; and a study skills module.
Second year
Study in this year focuses on critical analysis of literary and linguistic texts, drawing on the theory and skills developed in your first year. In Literature there is a major focus on the 19th and 20th centuries, and into the 21st, with an emphasis on historical and cultural contexts, issues of gender, sexuality, race, class and postmodernism. In English Language you are introduced to contemporary methods of the discussion of spoken and written language in today’s society. You negotiate an educational placement and conduct a research project in preparation for your final-year dissertation.
Third year
The third year brings the opportunity to opt for more specialist modules in English Literature, English Language, Drama, Film and Education. In addition to these taught modules, there is a dissertation which can be in an area of literature, drama, film or language, with or without an education focus. The final year culminates in your dissertation: this enables you to demonstrate the mature and sophisticated understanding of your subjects that you have developed over the course of the degree.
