As an undergraduate student in French and German at Southampton, you will have considerable choice in the composition of your degree, although language learning will be a core component throughout your course.
In your first year, you will be allocated to one of seven language stages according to your proficiency, and in all years of study you will benefit from the expertise and wide range of teaching and learning resources (including extensive electronic and televisual facilities) offered by the Centre for Language Study in the context of the HEFCE National Subject Centre for Language, Linguistics and Area Studies, which is hosted by the School of Modern Languages. Further options in your first year will include one or two courses specific to the languages in which you are specialising, focusing on cultural expression, social and political structures, or linguistic issues, as well as some or all of the introductory courses in the four Fields of Study (Linguistic Studies, Literary and Cultural Studies, Film and Television Studies and Social and Political Studies) within which courses in the School of Modern Languages are organised.
In your second and final years, you will choose language-specific courses that belong within one or more of the Fields of Study and field-specific courses that draw material from all the languages and cultures studied in the School of Modern Languages, according to your own interests. Throughout your programme of study, you will be encouraged to adopt interdisciplinary perspectives, and to cultivate awareness of the place and role of the country or countries you have chosen to study in the wider European and global context.
