Course Description

General linguistics is the study of the universal properties of language as they manifest themselves in the language system, the language capacity of individual language users, the use of language in varying social circumstances and the application of linguistic knowledge in technological environments.

The Master's programme in General Linguistics yields 60 ECTS credits: 40 credits for seminars addressing sub-areas of linguistics and 20 credits for a Master's thesis. Students must also attend ten lectures in the Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication lecture series.

Career prospects

Depending on the area of specialisation chosen, the programme provides a solid foundation for a career in such areas as clinical linguistics, curriculum development, language engineering, speech technology, language planning and artificial intelligence.

Admission requirments

Specific entry requirements

Applicants for the Master's programme should have at least a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in linguistics or another relevant field. The level of the Bachelor's degree must be comparable to that of a Dutch Bachelor's degree.

General entry requirements

Applicants must also fulfil the general entry requirements of the Graduate School for Humanities regarding academic background, grade average and English language proficiency. For more information, see this link.
