Course overview

You will have the opportunity to study a wide range of Music courses, German language, and courses relating to German Linguistic, Social and Political, Film and Television, and Literary studies.

A huge range of Music courses are offered from the Western classical tradition, jazz, popular, commercial and multicultural music to the music business, music in film and television and new musical technology. You can specialise your music studies in music history, analysis, performance or composition, or maintain a broad range of interests.

German language is taught in stages (from 1 to 7), enabling you to be placed in a course appropriate to your particular level, and encouraging you to work towards challenging but realistic targets.

You will spend year 3 of the four year course studying or working in a German speaking country. During this year you will work on an investigative project, exploring an issue of current importance in the place where you are staying.

In all years of study you will benefit from the wide range of teaching and learning resources (including extensive electronic and televisual facilities) offered by the Centre for Language Study, which works closely with the HEFCE National Subject Centre for Language, Linguistics and Area Studies, hosted at Southampton. A special unit in year two will prepare you for your year abroad in year three, and for the academic work you will complete during this year. Your year abroad is an opportunity to improve linguistic and cultural proficiency in your chosen language and to demonstrate your abilityto work independently over a sustained period.
