About the programme

The Research MA in Linguistics in Groningen is characterized by a unique combination of theoretical linguistics, neurolinguistics and psycholinguistics, and computational linguistics.

The teaching in the Research MA in Linguistics dovetails with the linguistics research at the University of Groningen, conducted within the Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG).  Linguistic research in Groningen concentrates on the structure, the processing and acquisition and the use of linguistic knowledge, particularly in the fields of syntax, semantics and discourse. Use is made of a multitude of linguistic methodologies – formal-theoretical analysis, corpus analysis, psycholinguistic experiments, behaviour studies, computational techniques.

Admission requirements

The prospective student should in any case meet the following admission requirements:

  • a Bachelor’s diploma in a field related to:
    • Linguistics
    • Clinical Linguistics, Speech and Hearing
    • Language and Culture Studies
    • Communication Science
    • Humanities Computing/Information Science
  • sufficient English skills to be able to follow the course successfully: a TOEFL score of 620/260/105, IELTS 7, or university-entrance level English (VWO level/Abitur)
  • sufficient knowledge, insight and skills in disciplines relevant to the course
  • sufficient ability to follow the course
