About the programme
The Linguistics Master’s programme is one of Utrecht University’s prestige programmes. These Masters are linked to research areas in which Utrecht University holds a leading position worldwide. Students participating in Utrecht Prestige Master’s programmes will be closely involved in the research activities of these internationally acclaimed research groups. The teaching is led by academics who actively participate in international networks and are at the forefront of their field.
Career Opportunities
This research degree programme prepares those graduates who want to pursue an academic career for application to PhD programmes either at Utrecht University or elsewhere. Those graduates will leave with a research proposal ready for use in applications of that type, or easily adaptable to such applications.
Entrance Requirements
The holder of a Dutch or foreign higher education degree who demonstrates knowledge, insight and skills in the following fields will be admitted to this Master’s programme:
- Knowledge in the field of linguistics at Bachelor’s degree level or equivalent, with a major in the field of linguistics and completed with a thesis, and/or a Bachelor’s degree programme or equivalent in the field of a discipline related to linguistics, as specified in the annex, with at least 45 ECTS of linguistic courses and completed with a thesis;
- Excellent insight into the nature of academic activities, curiosity and a focused interest in scientific research.
Proof of profiency in English
All other applicants, including applicants who hold a Dutch HBO diploma (diploma of higher professional education), must provide proof of proficiency in English. To do so, you are required to take one of the following English language tests:
- IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing. IELTS is the test preferred by Utrecht University.
- TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 93. Institutional scores are not accepted. The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062.
- Cambridge Certificates
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English at least a B grade.
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English at least a C grade.
