The "Modern China" programme is divided into three fields. Language training in modern Chinese (Mandarin) will take about half of the students' time. Speaking, reading and writing skills are developed equally. Several courses deal with methodological topics - basic philological methods and Chinese word processing and data research in the world wide web are taught, and students are introduced to Chinese political science and macro-economics. Lectures and courses are offered on a variety of topics, including Chinese history, ecology, media, literature, material culture, modern arts, gender studies and philosophy. Students may chose from these courses according to their own interests.
The "Modern China" graduates will have a good command of spoken and written Chinese as well as a sound knowledge of a great number of aspects of 20th and 21st century China. Being "generalists," they are able to deal with China in any field of preference. Experience won during their term in Beijing makes them fit for the job market both in the West and in China.
