The degree consists of three core areas:

English Linguistics

  • with classes on contemporary linguistic theory, empirical and descriptive linguistics and intensive communication practice

Multilingualism or Applied Linguistics

  • where students decide to study either the linguistics of an additional (foreign) language or one of the fields of applied linguistics offered (German as a Foreign Language, Phonetics, Linguistic Engineering, Clinical Linguistics (planned)

General Studies

  • including cultural studies, an internship and optionally an additional foreign language

The M.A. in Modern Language Linguistics - English is aimed at graduate students of language and linguistics who are interested in pursuing a research-oriented track, focusing on present-day English. Marburg has a focus on practical multilingualism and applied linguistics. The faculty provides a wide range of expertise and specialisations in the fields of language and linguistics, EFL teaching and research. Research foci are on Second Language Acquisition and Language Contact, Linguistic Engineering and E-Learning.

Students will learn how to describe and analyse language systematically, making use of both empirical methods and theoretical concepts. In addition, the development of key qualifications such as team competence, presentation skills, and familiarity with the new media is emphasised.
