As an undergraduate student in German at Southampton, you will have considerable choice in the composition of your degree, although language learning will be a core component throughout your course.
In all years of study you will benefit from the wide range of teaching and learning resources (including extensive electronic and televisual facilities) offered by the Centre for Language Study, which works closely with the HEFCE National Subject Centre for Language, Linguistics and Area Studies, hosted at Southampton.
Year one will introduce you to German literature and culture, German history and society, and linguistics. These options will be complemented by introductions to cultural expression, social and political history, and linguistic issues. In years two and four you will choose language- and field-specific courses which draw material from all the languages and cultures studied in the modern languages department.
A special unit in year two will prepare you for your year abroad in year three, and for the academic work you will complete during this year.
Your year abroad is an opportunity to improve linguistic and cultural proficiency in your chosen language and to demonstrate your abilityto work independently over a sustained period.
