Course Description

Linguistics is the study of language in all its forms and is concerned with the many different facets of language, from the physical properties of sound waves in speech to the social context in which conversations are embedded. The various branches of linguistics explore how languages are structured, what they have in common, the differences between them, how they are acquired and used, and how they change over time.

  • Spanish language is taught in stages (from 1 to 7), enabling you to be placed in a course appropriate to your particular level, and encouraging you to work towards challenging but realistic targets.
  • You will specialise in Linguistic Studies and select the majority of your courses from this field. You will focus on how languages are structured, how they develop, how they learn them, and how they relate to social and political issues in the countries in which they are spoken.
  • You will spend year 3 of the four year course studying or working in a Spanish speaking country. During this year you will work on an investigative project, exploring an issue of current importance in the place where you are staying.

  • IB: 30 points including 15 at Higher Level including 6 in Higher Level Spanish
