Course description

This programme provides students with critical knowledge of research methods and advanced theory in criminology, and has ESRC recognition as a Foundation course for research training.

The programme consists of five compulsory core units (totalling 75 credits), further options to a total value of 45 credits and a Masters' dissertation.

The core units are:

  • Researching Social Issues;
  • An Introduction
  • Evaluating Policy and Practice
  • Qualitative Research Methods
  • Introduction to Statistics and Data Analysis
  • Measures and Correlates of Crime

Career opportunities

Students pursuing the MRes degree receive comprehensive training in advanced research methods that will prepare them well for a career as a professional researcher or as a foundation for PhD research.

Entry requirements

Academic entry qualification overview:

A minimum Upper Second class honours degree, or the overseas equivalent. A Lower Second class honours degree or below, or the overseas equivalent, may be sufficient for initial entry on to the Postgraduate Diploma, with possible upgrade to the MRes.

English language:

Students whose first language is not English are required to hold IELTS 7.0 with a minimum writing score of 7, or TOEFL 106 internet-based, or Cambridge Certificate Grade C.

It is also recommended that applicants attend pre-sessional English language courses at the University.
