About the programme

The student must attend 20 lessons per week. These lessons are chosen by the student and a tutor (a professor of the faculty of law who guides the student in his/her studies). Courses in Civil Law, Criminal Law or Public Law and the participation in a seminar are mandatory.

At the end of each semester the candidate must pass a test in all courses he/she has attended. The lecturer decides whether the test is held orally or in writing. The final examination consists of the examination paper and an oral examination.

Foreign students are familiarised with basic elements of German law and improve their knowledge in specific fields of German law. At the end of the programme an examination ascertains whether the student has sufficient command of German law and is able to do responsible work on a chosen topic of German law.

The graduates will

  • be aware of the German legal system including knowledge about how decisions are made,
  • have developed skills for intercultural dialogue,
  • be aware of the ethical dimension of their work,
  • be able to communicate adequately in German,
  • have demonstrated their ability to tackle successfully complex practical projects in their special fields of study.
