About the programme
The LLM in International Law of Human Rights and Criminal Justice gives you in-depth understanding of a field of law that is often extremely complex. Taking the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms as your starting point, you analyse the connections between human rights and criminal justice and explore laws on a worldwide scale, as well as honing important practical skills such as conducting research, preparing legal memoranda, and practising litigation.

Entrance requirements
Acceptance to the programme is based on the following criteria:
- A valid BA in Law, awarded at least one month before the LLM programme begins
- Or: a BA in Liberal Arts, with at least some courses in law (7,5 ects) like Public International Law, Human Rights Law, International Organisations and – based on the track you will be following - International Law of Human Rights or International Criminal Law.
Proof of profiency in English
All other applicants, including applicants who hold a Dutch HBO diploma (diploma of higher professional education), must provide proof of proficiency in English. To do so, you are required to take one of the following English language tests:
- IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing. IELTS is the test preferred by Utrecht University.
- TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 93. Institutional scores are not accepted. The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062.
- Cambridge Certificates
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English at least a B grade.
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English at least a C grade.
