Do you already have a degree in a non-law subject? If so, this programme provides an opportunity to gain a full law degree in two years. The programme is popular with both international and UK students.

Birmingham Law School offers graduates in non-law subjects two special routes to gaining an academic qualification in law:

  • LLB for Graduates (two years)
  • Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies (one year)

They encourage enquiries to discuss which of these routes is best for you.

Compared to the Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies, the LLB for Graduates programme provides:

  • Opportunities for deeper study of a broader range of legal subjects
  • A chance to examine the law from a philosophical perspective
  • More time to acquire skills in legal reasoning and research
  • An Honours degree qualification

During your two years at Birmingham you will study the foundation subjects of common law, criminal law, public law, European law and property law.

First year

In your first year we assume that you have no prior knowledge of the law, so the programme starts with lectures and discussion groups on the legal system, legal sources and methods of reasoning. You then study modules in Public Law, Criminal Law and the Law of Obligations A (Contract) and B (Tort).

Second year

In the second year you study compulsory modules in Legal Foundations of the European Union and Property Law A and B, and can either choose to study the philosophy of law in the Jurisprudence module or an optional subject taken from those available to LLB students in their final year of studies.

Options available in the past have included: Agency and Domestic Sale of Goods; Company Law; Criminal Procedure and Evidence; Family Law; Human Rights; International Sale of Goods; Juvenile Justice; Law of the European Union; Law and Medicine; Public International Law; Shipping Law; and Women and the Criminal Justice System.

Teaching and assessment

In both years of study you take lectures alongside students on the other LLB programmes and supervisions with other students on the LLB for Graduates programme. Modules use a range of assessment methods including traditional examinations and assessed essays. All modules count towards the overall classification of this Honours degree, with a weighting of 25% and 75% for the first and second years respectively.

Career opportunities

If you are intending to qualify as a barrister or solicitor, this degree gives you exemption from the academic stage of the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board examinations in England and Wales provided you pass all the foundation subjects. The LLB for Graduates degree may also count towards legal qualifications in several other countries.

Fees

This programme is exempt from the standard undergraduate tuition fee. The fee increases annually but is always competitively priced. The fee for 2009–10 is not yet fixed but in 2008–09 it was £3,700 for home students and £9,400 for international students. Please note that the fee is payable annually, and will increase for your second year.

Professional accreditation

This degree is a ‘qualifying’ degree. This means that it provides exemption from the first or academic stage of the examinations required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board before you can qualify as a solicitor or barrister.

Entry requirements

Graduate entry: At least a lower second-class Honours degree (or equivalent from a university outside the UK). This programme is exempt from the National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT).
