This is an exciting four year degree programme, which allows students to study for a qualifying law degree and spend a year studying law in France. Its combination of English Law, French law and language along with the singular experience of the year abroad offers a distinctive and highly valued programme of legal studies. In addition, students with a high degree of competence in the French language have the opportunity to study for a Licence en droit during the year abroad.
You will study modules to ensure you are able to obtain a Qualifying Law Degree, as well as a wide range of law option modules. In addition to French language modules, you will study French law and legal language. Between Year 2 and Year 3 (Credit Levels 5 and 6) you will spend 12 months at a French university and study law in French, giving you the opportunity to obtain a French legal qualification. Arrangements exist between the University of Westminster and the universities of Nancy, Bordeaux, Nice and Paris X Nanterre, and you will not be charged tuition fees during your year abroad. You will develop links in Europe and emerge with an LLB which satisfies the professional bodies.
The first two years and the fourth year of the course are spent at Westminster studying the foundational courses of English law required by the Law Society and the Bar Council. Moreover, in preparation for the year abroad, students study the French language and in their second year they also study basic aspects of French law in French. In their third year, students study French law at one of the universities with which the Law School has exchange links.
The course combines legal study with legal skills, and is taught using a variety of teaching methods. You will be expected to develop your skills in relation to written and oral communication, team and individual working, independent learning, research and argument construction and analysis, using these skills within a commercial law environment. You will attend lectures for the core subjects with LLB Honours Law students.
A Law degree is seen as a valuable asset by a variety of employers, legal and non-legal. Legal careers include barristers and advocates, solicitors, clerks and officers of court, legal executives and paralegals. Law graduates also pursue careers in accountancy, the Civil Service, education and local government.
