Course description

The Manchester Law School is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the UK and has considerable strengths in major areas of teaching and research. There are three major disciplines within the School - with Criminology being one. The discipline of Criminology also contains within it socio-legal studies, and so forming the School's Centre for Criminology & Socio-Legal Studies, with teaching and research offered by recognised experts in these fields.

The School of Law at Manchester has a reputation for consistent excellence in research. Students have access to one of the best libraries in the country, a wide variety of web-based resources and the School's active research seminar programmes.  All research students are required to undergo formal training in research methods, which is provided by the School and by The Faculty of Humanities.

Entry requirements

Academic entry qualification overview:

Normally a good Second Class Honours degree, or the overseas equivalent, in the relevant discipline is required. Students eligible to transfer to the PhD at the end of the MPhil year are normally required to hold a postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline, at Merit or the overseas equivalent.

English language:

Students whose first language is not English are required to hold IELTS 7.0, with a minimum writing score of 7, or TOEFL 625 paper based with a minimum score of 5 in the test for written English, or TOEFL 106 internet-based, or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English Grade C.
