There are many universities in the world which offer joint degrees in History and Theory of Art and Literature (HTAL). The Jacobs University programme is, however, distinctive in several respects. For while we give due account to the historical dimension there is, nevertheless, a stronger emphasis on theory and methods than is found in other History and Theory of Art and Literature degrees. To some degree all our courses involve a combination of historical and theoretical issues, but each has a specific bias towards one or the other element. Eight of our core courses have a strong theory-emphasis, five have a strong historical weighting, and two combine the two in about equal measure. This noticeable overall bias towards theory and method is indicative of all our teaching staff's profound interest in the relation between forms of artistic production and the context of theoretical writing which influences that production, or which provides the appropriate intellectual clarification of its broader significance.
