Course details

Retail is one of the most dynamic of all service industries, and continues to be the largest private sector employer with nearly three million people employed across the UK. Over the last five years it has created more jobs that any other sector. Retail sales provide consistent benchmarks for economic and social development both in the UK and internationally. This degree integrates business and management subjects with the specialist knowledge required to work in the retail industry. Students benefit from a high level of industry contact, in particular with links to the Institute of Customer Service and the British Retail Consortium, as well as a guest lecture programme which ensures that students are introduced to current retail and management issues.

Career and progression opportunities

Students focus on preparing for a career in retail, including store management, logistics and merchandising. The combined elements and multidisciplinary nature of the course enables them to pursue a variety of career opportunities in a wide range of service/business environments. Graduates of our retail degrees have taken up positions with companies as diverse as Ted Baker, Tesco, Habitat, EDF Energy, New Look, Jaeger and River Island.

Entry requirements

• A-levels: BBC (typically translates to 280 points in the UCAS tariff). Applicants with only 2 full A-levels or a double award will be considered on an individual basis.
• International Baccalaureate: 28 points.
• QAA-approved access course: acceptable; subject-specific units.
• GCSE (minimum grade C): at least 3 subjects including English language and mathematics.
• Foundation degree/HND/HNC: possible transfer to years 2 or 3. Contact the course team for specific requirements.
• For non-native speakers of English: IELTS 6.0 overall, 6.0 in writing.
