Course description
The Management/Management (Specialism) degree programmes have a common first year, which provides a grounding in the disciplines underlying management. There are courses (compulsory) in accounting and finance, economics, psychology, sociology, quantitative methods, business law and an introduction to the study of management. Since the Management and Management (Specialism) degrees are identical in the first year, transfer between them is straightforward, so you should apply for only one of them.
After the first year the Management programme gives an increasingly wide range of choices and combinations which allows you develop and follow your own professional and intellectual interests. You will be able to choose courses from all the disciplines relating to Management, including accounting and finance, economics, employments studies/law, human resources, information systems, marketing, operations management, psychology, sociology, statistics and supply chain management. All the Management programmes offer the possibility of an international orientation in the second and final years, with study of firms and organisations across the world.
Course aims
The Management/Management (Specialism) programmes aim to:
- enable students to acquire state of the art knowledge and understanding of the field of management.
- provide an educational experience which will facilitate and promote students' intellectual development and life-long learning skills.
- promote critical awareness of the merits and complexities of management, and to inculcate an appreciation of the association between theory and practice.
- appraise students of important new developments in the field of management.
- enable students to develop appropriate practical and transferable skills.
- provide a high quality management programme.
Career opportunities
As a Management graduate you have many careers open to you in business and management in the public and private sectors, often related to your specialism. Our graduates become IT Managers, Chartered Accountants, Management Consultants, Human Resource Managers, Production Managers and so on - the list is a long one. Many go on to study for higher degrees in a wide range of areas.
Entry requirements
- English language: IELTS 6.5. Minimum 6 in any component. 577 in the TOEFL written test, 233 in the computerised TOEFL (including 5 in TWE), or 90 in the internet TOEFL with a minimum of 22 in each component.
- A level: Grades AAB. General Studies is accepted if one of four A Levels passed in the same sitting.
- AS level: Two AS-levels accepted in place of one A-level providing at least one AS-level is studied at Year 13.
- Unit grade information: The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit grade information which, like all other available information, will inform the consideration of applications.
- GCSE: Grade B in English language and Mathematics.
- Key Skills qualification: The University warmly welcomes applications from students studying the Key Skills qualification. However, as the opportunities to take these modules are not open to all applicants, currently this is not an essential requirement of the University.
- International Baccalaureate: 35 points with 6, 6, 7 in the Higher Level subjects.
