Governments are increasingly encouraging the public sector to adopt private sector practices, and boundaries between the two are beginning to blur. Almost any business today will have regular dealings with the world of central and local government.
Current shifts in the governance landscape, which includes networks of quangos, other public bodies, voluntary sector organisations and private sector organisations, are an important part of the operating environment of businesses. The BSc in Business Management with Government combines a broad-based business management degree with a theory-driven element of government and public policy.
First year
The first year is a compulsory foundation year and introduces key areas in the study of business and government. In the Analytical Techniques for Business and IT module you will be streamed according to your qualifications in Mathematics and Statistics.
Second and third years
In these years you begin to have some choice within the themed structure of the programme. Modules offered range from Business Law, International Marketing and Business Accounting to Delivering Public Services and Policy Evaluation. In the second year, you will also be offered the opportunity of a week-long field trip to the city of Lyon in France. The final year focuses on evaluation of policies and involves a short placement in a mini-consultancy which will enable you to put the skills and knowledge you will have acquired over the three years of the course into practice.
The modules offered in the last two years of the course will change from time to time as they are developed to reflect the ever-changing world of business and government and its operating environment.
Teaching and assessment
In addition to formal lectures there are small group classes, individual and group exercises and presentations. Assessment is by a mixture of written examinations, essays and project work.
