MA Conference and Events Management is a course specifically designed for people who want to enter, or make further progress in, management-level careers in the conference and events industries. Students from this course enter a wide range of careers, in both the private and the public sectors, in Britain and internationally. These careers range from conference and events planning, through venue management, to destination marketing – working with a tourism organisation or convention bureau to attract conferences and events to a particular country or city. With its several hundred conference venues and its rich supply of convention hotels, London is a world leader in terms of the high-profile conferences it attracts from the UK, Europe and beyond. This city is also the location for a vast range of cultural and sporting events, including the forthcoming Olympic Games. These characteristics of London make it an ideal place in which to study Conference and Events Management.
The Centre for Tourism Research obtained the maximum score of 24 in a Quality Assessment exercise undertaken by the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, making it one of only two UK university departments to achieve this level of excellence for Tourism teaching. In addition to their teaching role, staff are actively involved in consultancy and cutting-edge research for a number of government and private organisations, including visitor and convention bureaux and destination marketing organisations.
The course explores the management, planning and promotion of conferences and events as well as exploring their strategic role and impacts for destinations and venues. It sets conferences and events within the wider context of the travel and tourism industry, to which they are closely linked.
