This is a unique ‘three-way’ programme combining themes in business management, European studies and language, and language-related study in a modern European language. This will enable you to work in a business and policy environment that is increasingly international in scope, and where the European market is increasingly important.
The languages available to study within this degree include French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian. You will spend one-third of your time studying your chosen language, and all language tuition will have a practical language focus. All languages (except French, at the time of writing) offer beginners’ streams.
First year
In addition to the study of your language, this year lays a foundation for the study of business and European studies. It introduces key areas of business and management (including accounting, organisational studies and economics). In European studies, you are introduced to key aspects of European history, identity, culture/media and politics.
Second and fourth years
In these years you continue to develop your language skills and further your knowledge of business (including marketing and human resource management) and European studies (politics, culture and society). The modules offered may change from time to time, as they are developed to reflect the ever-changing world of business and policy. This ensures a breadth to your education.
The year abroad
This year is essential for developing fluency in your language and is spent at a partner university. You study business in your chosen language and undertake project work for your degree. Exchanges in the EU are operated as part of the Erasmus programme and you will be eligible for a small EU grant. It may also be possible to undertake a work-based placement. During the year abroad, all students will study in their chosen modern European language and will cover a range of modules in business management and European studies.
Teaching and assessment
In addition to formal lectures there are small group classes, individual and group exercises and presentations. Assessment is by a mixture of written examinations, presentations/group work, essays and project work.
As with our other four-year programmes, the second year and the third year spent abroad each contribute 12.5% of the marks for final degree classification (25% total for Stage II), the other 75% coming from Year 4.
Career opportunities
Proficiency in business and policy and fluency in another language, coupled with cultural awareness, are attributes which are prized by major employers from all sectors of the economy. Because of this, our students find employment in many areas within the private and public sectors – within the UK and around the world.
Professional accreditation
Depending on the options you choose, you may be able to gain partial exemption from the examinations of professional bodies such as CIM, CIMA and ACCA. This will depend on the options chosen in your second and final years.
Entry requirements
Other qualifications are considered – see the entry requirements section for full details
Additional information
You will normally need a B at A2 level in your chosen language. If you have not studied this language previously, you will need to prove some language competence (usually by having an A level in another foreign language, but an AS level or GCSE may be considered). Applicants who choose the French option, however, must have a B in A level French. Enter your choice of language under ‘further details’ on the UCAS application form.
