Materials Science is a key technological area which has a strong and determining influence on social and technological development. The EMMS Master's programme, taught entirely in English, is an interdisciplinary, research-led Master's programme in Materials Science with integrated student and staff mobility. It was designed for holders of an excellent first degree in Materials Science / Engineering and related areas such as physics or chemistry and provides specialist training in the technology of conventional and modern materials - metals, intermetallics, polymers, composites, ceramics and glass. Based on long term excellence in teaching and research of the EMMS staff, students will deal with the relationships between synthesis, composition, processing, structure, physical and chemical properties and the performance of materials in advanced technological applications. Special attention will be given to the application of structural and functional materials in mechanical engineering, bio-engineering, nanotechnologies, microelectronics and microsystems technology.

To offer a truly outstanding programme, the TUHH has established co-operations with strong partner universities to enable the students to select from a larger variety of specialisation tracks. Modules are taught by academic staff from three partner universities and leading guest researchers.

The programme seeks to prepare students with the best theoretical background and first hand practical experiences and is unique in its strong focus on research and close contacts to industry. Since the technological challenges of modern society and the requirements of the globalised labour market call not only for an excellent engineering education but also for a sound qualification in the fields of business and management, soft skills, and humanities, the programme includes a large variety of "non-technical" courses. Thus, students will enjoy an excellent learning environment in which they learn to integrate theory and practice by solving practical problems with a well-developed academic foundation and by approaching theoretical problems with a practically relevant perspective.

For the outstanding academic quality and excellent services offered to its students, EMMS was selected by the European Union as one of the first programmes in ERASMUS MUNDUS, a scheme to support integrated Master's courses of outstanding academic quality and mobility.
