Course description

Technical Textiles is a rapidly expanding sector based on cutting-edge technology, performance materials and growing profitability. Products are used in vital and diverse industries, including aerospace, biomedical, geotextiles, and sportswear. To innovate and create in this growing industry, a 'new graduate' is in demand by global companies.

The programme

This unique MSc by Research programme is made up of taught units and an in-depth research project. A mix of wide-ranging taught units across the School is available, and includes:

  • Technical Textiles
  • Paper Manufacture and Paper Science
  • Polymer Chemistry and Molecular Characterisation
  • Polymer Processing, Structure and Properties
  • Design / Structure of Materials

Your research project will normally involve a leading industrial company, and in collaboration with the industrial supervisor and the University, you will develop a `real' research topic.  By fully utilising the facilities and expertise at both the industrial and University site, you will be able to tailor your programme components to your career aspirations.

Career prospects

Graduates of the programme will be equipped to lead the development of innovative products and processes in the technical textiles industry as well as to carry out further study for higher degrees.

Entry requirements

Academic entry qualification overview:

You will need to be a science and engineering graduate with at least a 2.2 Honours degree, or equivalent. Subject to satisfactory progress, it is possible to transfer to PhD at the end of the degree, requiring a further two years full-time study, or four years part-time.

English language:

If English is not your first language, you will need to take and meet minimum requirements for the following recognised English language qualifications: IELTS (6.5 with no sub-test under 5.5); TOEFL (570 with 5.0 in TWE); CBTOEFL (230 with 5.0 in TWE).
