This Mathematics Major programme allows you to combine your study of mathematics with an interest in philosophy.
Two-thirds of the programme consists of mathematics. The remaining one-third of your studies will provide you with a comprehensive grounding in philosophy. You will gain many of the benefits you would on our Single Honours programmes, such as analytical, statistical, and problem-solving skills, the ability to think logically, to use technical language and to express complex ideas clearly and accurately. The programme is carefully designed to give you a wide choice of higher-level modules in your final year.
The combination of mathematics and philosophy is a classic one; indeed many historical figures have made significant contributions in both subjects. As well as studying the works of philosophers such as Hume, you will study subjects such as logic, the theory of knowledge and moral philosophy.
First year
Your first year is carefully designed to manage the step up from school to university mathematics and to teach the key ideas required in later years of the programme. Alongside core calculus and algebra, you take modules in pure mathematics and either discrete maths and statistics or mechanics and computational maths. In Philosophy, you study topics such as epistemology, logic and ethics.
It is often possible to transfer to Single Honours Mathematics after the end of your first year.
Second year
In the second year you take mathematics modules introducing some of the more advanced ideas, such as real and complex variable theory, which will allow you to make an informed choice in your final year according to your particular strengths and interests. In Philosophy you might study the works of Hume or the philosophy of mind.
Third year
The third year offers you a choice of modules allowing you to specialise in one area or cover several different areas. Depending on your choices in your second year, the range of modules can be extensive, allowing you to take many of the topics available to Single Honours mathematicians, whilst continuing to pursue your interests in philosophy.
