There are two principal groups within the Department, namely Pure Mathematics and the Statistical Laboratory. The latter is a sub-department of DPMMS. Pure Mathematics covers the core mathematical topics of algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory, logic and combinatorics. The Statistical Laboratory, founded in the late 1940s, is the home of `applicable mathematics', interpreted as probability, statistics, mathematics for operational research, and financial mathematics.
DPMMS has in recent years been the home of four Fields medallists, of whom Professors Baker (retired), Gowers and Thompson (retired) are still members of the Department.
DPMMS aims to continue its research at the highest international level across the range of its activities in Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. It seeks to maintain its position as a leading institution for the training of PhD students to become professional mathematicians of quality. These targets are pursued and achieved within a vibrant research environment in which the search for excellence is paramount.
