Course details

This course provides you with a broad education in mechanical engineering and the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge in aeronautical engineering. Graduates are well placed for a range of interesting careers in the aerospace sector. The industrial relevance of the course is enhanced by staff who are actively engaged with local industry and in conducting industrially relevant research.

This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as meeting the educational requirements stage of Chartered Engineer formation. Successful completion of the MEng fulfils the full educational requirements.

Career and progression opportunities

This degree is very popular in industry and consequently our graduates have a good employment record. Recent graduates have gone on to jobs including mechanical engineer at McAlpine Helicopters Ltd, logistics administrator for Lucas Aerospace and trainee graduate engineer at MSX International.

After satisfactory completion you may go on to further study at MSc or PhD level within the school or elsewhere.

Entry requirements

  • A-levels: BEng BBC (280 UCAS points), MEng BBB/ABC (300 UCAS points), including maths and a physical science. Applicants with only 2 full A-levels or a double award will be considered on an individual basis. General Studies excluded.
  • ND/C (Level 3): BEng DMM, MEng DDD.
  • International Baccalaureate: BEng 30/MEng 32 points, specified subjects including maths and a physical science at Higher level.
  • QAA-approved access course: not acceptable.
  • GCSE (minimum grade C): at least 5 subjects including English language and mathematics and a physical science.
  • Foundation degree/HND/HNC direct to year 2 for suitable applicants.
  • For non-native speakers of English: IELTS 6.0 overall, 6.0 in writing.
