The aim of the programme is to provide students with a systematic understanding of the scientific basis of traditional and novel microbiological concepts, as well as the knowledge, specialist practical skills and critical awareness needed to enable graduates to pursue a career in microbiology.
This programme consists of eight compulsory course units:
Masters students will also complete a three-month research project and dissertation.
Graduates from the programme typically find employment as biomedical scientists or clinical scientists in the NHS and related organisations, or as medical microbiologists in industrial and pharmaceutical settings. In addition many graduates progress to PhD study and a research or academic career.
Academic entry qualification overview: The programme is suitable for graduates in microbiology, medical laboratory sciences, medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and other biology degrees with an element of microbiology.
An honours degree (minimum 2:2), or overseas equivalent, is required for direct entry to the programme. Non-standard applicants for the programme will be considered on an individual basis, but may be required to enrol initially on the Diploma.
English language: Students whose first language is not English require a minimum of IELTS 6.5, or TOEFL 575 paper based or 230 computer based.
