A love and appreciation of music is inborn in many. Some also have an interest in the technology behind the music – to design and build something that moves, makes a sound or controls it. This degree combines both these aspects by enabling you to apply your basic interest in technology to your musical interests and abilities.
The course views your musical interests and abilities more as an application of your basic interest in engineering. The engineering content, principally electronics, maths and computing is, in itself, of fundamental importance. This is enhanced by the creative aspects more likely to be found in technological design. The content of the degree therefore reflects the technological aspects of 'music technology'. Once you have completed the degree you will not only be able to use the musical systems but understand them in depth and design some of the detail. In addition, recording work in the studio will move beyond 'knob-twiddling' to the science and engineering of the equipment in the recording environment.
There is an enormous range of possibilities for you as a graduate with a music systems engineering background. At the creative end of the spectrum this includes sound engineering and recording, music production, electronic or computer based music composition or in the more technical areas of recording studios. You can also consider careers ranging from multimedia, film or theatre technology to musical instrument manufacture. The wide spectrum of learning on this degree will also give you the right background for a career in software design or the electronics industry.
Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma (normally Access to Science); achievement of level 3 credits in Maths (to include algebra and calculus), achievement of level 2 credits in Maths and English Language. The Maths Unit at Level 3 must cover the core content for AS Maths.
English Language requirements: All students will have a recognised English Language qualification of at least GCSE grade C or an equivalent such as the British Council's International English Language Test (IELTS) grade 6.0.
