Media Art and Design in the Department of Media is understood as a cultural and artistic practice. It identifies decisive instances of communication in the media. The tasks of media design are related to broad areas of day-to-day culture, taking into special consideration the fact that data and information, along with high cultural, pop cultural, and trivial cultural forms and content are currently circulating around the world.
In this way, the dissemination and processing of information is as much a topic of media design as the creation and implementation of fictions, and the development of new public realms, communicative spaces and interpersonal frameworks. The approaches of media design are of an artistic, technical, and organisational nature. Media Art and Design at the Bauhaus University Weimar derives its special profile from the connection of auditory, visual, event-based, and conceptual issues, in order to gain both artistic and scientific insights.
The focus of Media Art and Design is artistic-creative training in the fields of fashion and public appearances, multimedial narration, media events, interface design, design of medial environments, experimental radio, electroacoustic composition, and sound design. These fields are supplemented by scientific and technical course work from the areas of media culture and media systems.
The Department of Media offers the programme: Integrated International Media Art and Design Studies M.F.A. (IIMDS), which includes one year at the Tongji University in Shanghai. At the end of the fourth semester, after successful completion and presentation of the Master's thesis, the Department of Media awards the Master of Fine Arts while the Tongji University Shanghai awards the Master of Arts (Communication).
