Course Description
This programme offers a comprehensive range of options and three pathways: Musicology (including theory, history and analysis); Composition; and Performance. Each pathway offers skills training, orientation modules and individually taught work.
The MMus is a normal next step after either a BA or BMus in music.
Programme structure
Composition
- Core modules: Analytical techniques; Composition seminar; Compositional tutorials 1 and 2
- Optional module: Critical practice in musicology; or an individually negotiated topic (see Musicology)
- Plus: Composition portfolio
Musicology
- Core modules: Analytical techniques; Critical practice in musicology; Research skills 1 and 2
- Two optional modules: Either individually negotiated topics; or optional modules from other music pathways or another School of Humanities MA programme
- Plus: Dissertation (15,000–20,000 words)
Performance
- Core modules: Elements of musical performance; Instrumental or Vocal tuition 1 and 2; Research skills 1
- Optional module: Performance teaching seminar; an individually negotiated topic (see Musicology); or another School of Humanities MA module
Entry requirements
Upper second-class honours degree or equivalent.
