Music and Management Sciences: University of Southampton

Course overview

In addition to the musical studies described above, this programme develops your understanding of key management functions, with an opportunity to apply management skills such as problem solving, teamwork, communication, numeracy and self-management. 50/50 split between the subjects in each year, or the option of 25 per cent in a third subject A core programme of management sciences in years one and two, with a free choice of music options In year three, a free choice from a wide range of options in both subjects.

Course content

• Performance: early music; classical and contemporary art music; jazz and pop
• Composition: free composition (classical and/or commercial, television and film)
• Orchestration and arranging
• Songwriting
• Historical and critical topics: music history and analysis from the Middle Ages to the present; world music; jazz and pop; issues in sociology and contemporary culture
• Music business
• Music therapy and community music

Entry requirements

• A levels: ABB with B in Music and a pass at grade 8 ABRSM, Rockschool or Trinity in one instrument; and grade B from GCSE Mathematics
• IB: 30 points including 15 at Higher level with grade 6 from Higher Level Music; and a pass at grade 8 ABRSM, Rockschool or Trinity in one instrument; and grade B from GCSE Mathematics
