The course incorporates the National Occupational Standards for Nutritional Therapy and the Nutritional Therapy Council's (NTC) Core Curriculum. Students are eligible to apply for membership of the British Association of Nutritional Therapists (BANT), and may also join the Nutrition Society.
Nutritional therapy is the application of nutrition and health science to enable individuals to maximise their health potential. This course, the first nutritional therapy degree in Europe, is a response to the growing demand for high quality theoretical and practical skills training for practitioners. Nutritional therapists work in clinical practice to assess nutritional status and functional capacity. They recognise that each person’s needs are unique, depending on a number of factors, from inherited strengths and weaknesses to the influence of diet, lifestyle and environment. Nutritional therapists work with patients with chronic health problems and provide advice on disease prevention and control. Interventions include dietary modification, food supplements, phytonutrients and functional foods.
The majority of students join this course with the intention of becoming practitioners. Modules are available to help with establishing your own practice and to be well prepared to work as an independent professional. The strong underpinning in health science provides a sound preparation for a wide range of other careers including work within community health programmes, both governmental and NGO, the food supplement industry, media and teaching, and research. Graduates may also progress to postgraduate study.
