The Unit was founded by Professor Morris Brown in 1985 and since then their basic and clinical research output has expanded rapidly, with over 200 papers published to date. Their Principal Investigators comprise clinical and basic scientists with broad interests from genes to the function of the human cardiovascular system in health and disease. Their students undertake research directly relevant to discovering new treatments for disease, exploiting information emerging from the human genome. Thus they can rapidly translate discoveries from laboratory-based research to the clinic: indeed, previous students have an excellent record of publication and prizes for their research.
Key research areas
- Human receptor pharmacology, functional proteomics and positron emission tomography (Dr AP Davenport)
- Molecular genetics of hypertension (Dr KM O'Shaughnessy and Prof MJ Brown)
- Cardiovascular pharmacology and physiology (Dr IB Wilkinson).
Research collaborations
- They have collaborative projects with other institutions including the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre and the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine.
- Links also exist with the Wales Heart Research Institute in Cardiff and the University of New South Wales, Australia.
