About the programme

This degree programme enables you to develop your philosophical and reasoning skills alongside the practical and theoretical study of music. Music and musicology have always encouraged and prompted philosophical speculations: what, after all, is music? How and where does it exist? What are the aesthetic and critical assumptions that lie behind its composition, performance and reception? Many of the issues and topics you will encounter on the philosophy core courses will have relevance for your musical studies: freedom, creativity, abstraction, and the relations between reason and feeling.

Entry requirments

A level

• Typical offer: in the range AAB-ABB
• Specific entry requirements: A levels (or equivalent) must include Music or Music Technology, at grade B. Alternatively, you must have other evidence of advanced musical literacy (to Grade VII theory standard).

International Baccalaureate

• Typical offer range: 34 to 36 points overall, including at least 5 in Higher Level Music

English language requirements

• IELTS 6.5 overall and not less than 6.0 in both the Listening and Writing sections.
• Internet-based TOEFL with 90 overall, including at least 24 in Speaking and 25 in Writing.
• The University also accepts a range of other qualifications:
  • GCSE or IGCSE English as a first language: grade C.
  • GCSE English or IGCSE as a second language: grade B.
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate in English (CAE): grade B.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): grade C.
  • Cambridge English Language 1119: between grades 1 and 6.
