Philosophy and History: University of Southampton

Course overview

This programme builds on the University’s strengths in both areas, benefiting in particular from historiography in history and from philosophy’s interest in the history of ideas.

There are four units from each subject every year, or you can substitute one unit from a third subject. In year three your dissertation may be in either subject.

Students follow courses in each department on an equal basis, with an emphasis on the Philosophy side on the history of philosophy. A final-year dissertation may be submitted in either History of Philosophy.

Entry requirements

• A levels: ABB including grade B in History
• IB: 30 points including 15 at Higher Level with 6 in Higher Level History
