There has been a long tradition of philosophy in the University, with the Moral Sciences Tripos (renamed `philosophy' in 1970) being taught since 1852. Cambridge has been the philosophical home of Russell, Moore and Wittgenstein and others, and made a significant contribution to the philosophy of the twentieth century. Today it is still one of the most notable centres for philosophical research in Britain with a lively graduate community.

Key research areas:

  • Philosophical logic; metaphysics (Dr Arif Ahmed)
  • Metaphysics; ethics; philosophy of mind and language (Prof Simon Blackburn)
  • Kant; epistemology; philosophy of mind (Prof Quassim Cassam)
  • Political philosophy; feminism
  • (Dr Clare Chambers)
  • Political and social thought with reference to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; aesthetics (Dr Raymond Geuss)
  • Philosophy of mind; philosophy of language (Prof Jane Heal)
  • Metaphysical ethics; moral psychology; bioethics (Dr Hallvard Lillehammer)
  • Medieval philosophy (Dr John Marenbon)
  • Philosophical logic; metaphysics; philosophy of mathematics (Dr Alex Oliver)
  • Political philosophy; ethics(Dr Serena Olsaretti)
