About the programme

Geophysicists seek answer questions like these by linking observations made at the surface to physical processes inside our planet. This field of study can be seen as a combination of physics, mathematics, computer sciences, geology and instrument engineering, the aim of which is to determine the structure and evolution of our planet.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Geophysics Master’s programme are eligible for national and international PhD programmes. In the past, Utrecht University geophysicists have been quite successful in acquiring PhD and postdoctoral positions at universities abroad. They were also successful in finding jobs in industry, engineering companies, software companies and in private and governmental agencies involved in earth sciences or the environment.

Entrance Requirements

Students with a university Bachelor’s degree

Applicants should have at least a:

• BSc in Geophysics, Physics or Geology with a strong background in mathematics and physics; or
• BSc from University College Utrecht

Proof of profiency in English

All other applicants, including applicants who hold a Dutch HBO diploma (diploma of higher professional education), must provide proof of proficiency in English. To do so, you are required to take one of the following English language tests:

• IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing. IELTS is the test preferred by Utrecht University.
• TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 93. Institutional scores are not accepted. The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062.
• Cambridge Certificates
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English at least a B grade.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English at least a C grade.
