Introduction

The Master's programme in Physics focuses on the study of fundamental research and its applications. You learn to test, explain and develop theories on physical phenomena and to analyse and solve problems using scientific methods. You benefit from a well-rounded education that combines a broad understanding of physics with in-depth knowledge of specific areas and the ability to think and work at an academic level.

Admission requirments

  • Educational requirements: Depending on the specialization track: BSc degree in chemistry, physics, mathematics or theoretical physics.
  • Language requirements: TOEFL (minimum score: 570 (papertest); 230 (computertest); 89 (internet)); IELTS (minimum score: 6.5), A Cambridge Examination Score with a minimum score of CAE A or B+, CPE B is also accepted.
  • Objectives: The University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Free University (VU) offer a combined master track in modern physical science covering physics and chemistry aspects of systems at atomic, molecular and larger scales.
  • Subjects: Based on internationally high standing and active research programs in the Amsterdam area, the master program integrates teaching and research in: condensed matter science; quantum atom optics; molecular photoscience; biophysics; biomedical physics; computational physics and chemistry; theoretical chemistry.
  • Modes of instruction: Lectures, research and thesis.
