The BSc Politics and Sociology degree provides allows you to tailor the combination of disciplines to match your interests. Sociology focuses on identity, representations, power and interaction in society, and so provides an interesting complement to the key political concepts that are also explored. Each discipline occupies approximately half of the degree programme and you will take core modules in each discipline.
In the politics element in Year 2, you will take a year-long double module on democracy and the modern state, and select a further core module in either political theory, comparative politics, or international relations. In the third year, you will be able to choose most of your modules from the available list of options.
In Year 2 of the sociology part of the programme the focus is on social divisions and issues such as race and ethnicity. In the third year you will have the opportunity to carry out investigations of specific areas of social life. The sociology component also provides opportunities to study elements of social policy.
