Course description
The programme combines academic study with practice in mental health. The main focus of the programme is on AMHP training. Service users and carers may also apply for the course. The focus of the course is on mental health, with emphasis on the integration of mental health issues, psychiatry and mental health law in multi-disciplinary teams but from a social perspective. The lecturers will reflect this multi-disciplinary approach and will include psychiatrists, lawyers, psychologists, nurses and social workers, as well as service users and carers.
The course is designed to meet all the requirements of the GSCC for the full PQSSW Award in Mental Health at the Higher Specialist Level, via the AMHP Award. Students undertaking AMHP training must be supported by their employers and seconded to the training. The employers must agree to provide a Practice Assessor and relevant learning opportunities. To meet the requirements for AMHP, students must successfully complete Units 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8, plus a competent Practice Portfolio. Those students who successfully complete the 8 units are entitled to register for an MSc which includes a literature review and dissertation.
