Course Description

Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour and mental functioning. This includes everything from close relationships to the visual system and memory, and from how a child learns to ageing. Addiction, pain management, autism, AD/HD, the effect of food additives, sexual health and the treatment of diabetes are just a few of the areas in which the research teams are seeking to aid the wider community.

The aim of the degree is to develop highly competent psychologists with a selection of transferable skills. It is recognised by the British Psychological Society (providing Graduate Basis for Registration) and their strength as a research-led School also allows them to equip their students with the analytic and reasoning skills favoured by employers. This is supported by the fact that more than 93% of the graduates are employed on leaving or go on to higher education.

In year one you will explore the foundations that support psychological theory, research methods and analysis, and be introduced to practical psychology experiments.

Year two covers material from six key research areas: cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, biological psychology, learning and behaviour, social psychology and personality psychology.

Year three offers the opportunity to specialise in an area of your choice, with seminars based on individual reading and open discussion of the latest research. You will also undertake a research project in your final year, the best example of which will be awarded a prize by the School.
