The University Department of Surgery has major clinical and research commitments in the fields of organ transplantation and transplant immunology, headed by Professor Andrew Bradley, and in regenerative medicine and stem cell research, headed by Professor Roger Pedersen. Integrated research programmes are being established with Papworth Hospital and the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine (Professor John Wallwork) and with the Department of Oncology (David Neal, Professor of Surgical Oncology).
Key research areas
- Key areas of research are in the fields of organ transplantation, stem cell biology and orthopaedic surgery including:
- Cellular and molecular mechanisms of rejection and induction of tolerance, in both clinical transplant recipients and in models of allogeneic transplantation (JA Bradley and colleagues)
- Clinical trials and pancreas transplantation (CJE Watson and colleagues)
- Fundamental and translational studies on development of human embryonic stem cells, including differentiation into specialised cell types and development of transplantation therapies (RA Pedersen, JA Bradley and colleagues)
Research collaborations
- The Department of Surgery encompasses the Orthopaedic Research Unit (Professor N Rushton) and the Stem Cell Medicine group (Professor R Pederson, www.stemcells.cam.ac.uk).
- They have strong links with the Cambridge Breast Unit, the Centre for Cardiovascular Medicine, and the Departments of Pathology, Oncology, Genetics, Medicine, Materials Science and Neurosurgery.
