About the programme
Utrecht University’s History and Philosophy of Science Master’s programme offers qualified students the opportunity to pursue an intensive course of study in the historical and philosophical dimensions of science. Science is one of the major determinants of modern society. Both the history and philosophy of science aim at a deeper understanding of the nature of scientific enterprise and the knowledge it produces.
Career Opportunities
The programme prepares students for intensive research at the PhD level and qualifies them for a wide range of positions. Graduates of the Master’s programme in History and Philosophy of Science may either enrol in PhD programmes or seek employment in organisations that place great stock on an understanding of the nature and history of science and on a critical stance with regard to scientific claims and methods.
Entrance Requirements
Applicants are expected to hold one of the following bachelor degrees:
- a BSc degree of Science with a major in Physics
- a BSc degree of any of the Sciences with preferably a minor in History and/or Philosophy
- a BSc degree with a major in History and/or Philosophy, and a minor in one of the Sciences.
- a BSc degree in any of the Humanities with preferably a minor in one of the Natural or Life Sciences
Proof of profiency in English
All other applicants, including applicants who hold a Dutch HBO diploma (diploma of higher professional education), must provide proof of proficiency in English. To do so, you are required to take one of the following English language tests:
- IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing. IELTS is the test preferred by Utrecht University.
- TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 93. Institutional scores are not accepted. The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062.
- Cambridge Certificates
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English at least a B grade.
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English at least a C grade.
