About the programme

The International Max Planck Research School for Optics and Imaging (IMPRS-OI) is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Society, the Max Planck Research Group "Optics, Information and Photonics", the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits. The research school is further supported by Siemens Medical Solutions. These partners combine their skills to create an interdisciplinary training programme for doctoral students. Research topics range from the fundamentals of modern optics to medical imaging.

In Erlangen, two graduate programmes on optics are offered: the International Max Planck Research School for Optics and Imaging, and the Erlangen Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT). The IMPRS-OI concentrates on fundamentals and applications of modern optics, as well as on imaging techniques with a focus on medical applications. It closely collaborates with SAOT, a technology-oriented programme focussing on applications of optical technologies in engineering. Both programmes are interlinked and a double application is possible and encouraged.
