  1. Fundamentals of optical effects and materials:
    • ray optics, optical electromagnetism, guided waves, light-matter interaction in dilute and condensed matter, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, wave propagation
  2. Optical devices and systems:
    • lens design & instruments (microscopes, telescopes), optical sensors, optical communications subsystems, laser devices, laser systems, opto-electronics devices (display units)
  3. Imaging science and image analysis:
    • imaging systems, statistical signal and image processing (inverse problems), 3D computer graphics and virtual reality
  4. New frontiers in optics:
    • optomechatronics (3D metrology, surface remote sensing, advances in optical fabrication, adaptive optics, optomechanical design)
    • new lasers (quantum dots laser, petawatt / femtosecond / megajoule lasers, Quantum cascade lasers)
    • biophotonics: fluorescence sensors, optical tweezers, optics for health (laser diagnosis and surgery)
    • nanophotonics: photonic bandgap structures, light sieves, photonic crystals, subwavelength structures
    • telecommunications: optical fibres, optical active components and optical signal processing
    • quantum information and atom optics: optical cryptography, single atoms/molecules and photons (Q-bits), Bose-Einstein condensates

Students are trained for technical or scientific positions in an academic or industrial environment specialised in optics or using optics. Ph.D. studies are a natural extension of the course.
