Urban Research at the Institute for European Urban Studies deals with topics that are tested against such current models as the "European city," "Compact City," "Social City," "Net City" or "Zwischenstadt". In this way, the important questions about public space in cities, the relationship between city and countryside, public involvement in urban planning, the multi-functionality of the downtown area and the social integration of the various groups of people living in cities, as well as many others, are raised and viewed in a new light. The PhD programme offers graduate students a diverse curriculum in the fields of urban development, sociology, spatial planning and project development. The interdisciplinary urban research is represented by a broad spectrum of instructors in architecture, urban planning, sociology, political science, geography and history. Graduate students can thus incorporate new ideas into their topics and examine them from perspectives that until now have been almost completely ignored.
